Sunday 31st January 2010
Our Apartment in Wellington was perfectly located for being right in the heart of the city. What we were not aware of was that AC/DC were in town performing in concert. The apartment next to us was occupied by fans going to the concert. A little noisy before they left! We were awoken in the early hours by their return, also the noise of the traffic and then the howling wind! It was all going so well!

So we headed off to the ferry terminal to catch the Interislander ferry which crosses from Wellington to Picton in just over 3 hours. This is how we had pictured the crossing in our heads!

We had imagined a smooth, calm crossing enjoying the breathtaking views especially
as we entered the Marlborough sounds in the South Island.

Instead the only sounds we heard were of people being unwell! 95% of our fellow passengers had come from the AC/DC concert and were in their flip flops, shorts and not much else. They were certainly an interesting bunch!
So we rocked from side to side and up and down in a force 7 storm, not venturing outside to take in the scenery! It was a memorable voyage.

Once we entered the Marlborough sounds the sea did calm although it was blowing a gale when we arrived in Picton Harbour.

From here we headed to our next stop, Raetihi Lodge in the Kenepuru sounds. The drive was probabaly the most torturous I have ever done, there were bends every 50 metres as we traced around the waters edge in our hire car. This was not what we needed after the ferry crossing!
We had booked this hotel as a two day rest period, away from everything to chill and relax. Stress was running high! We were told to be at Ta Mehia at 15.30 where our water taxi would meet us to take us to Raetihi.

When this boat turned up we began to worry...............

Karen was beginning to question my planning!

And then in the distance and spot on time it arrived. The 15.30 to Raetihi!

And so we left our hire car and headed off to 48 hours in paradise, a quiet peaceful hotel with fine food, wine and gorgeous scenery.
